I have a Malaysian friend who sells pirated games. The stories he have about Singaporeans are pretty interesting.

I’ll retell a particularly thought provoking story. In this story, the buyer has already paid for the games in his shop, but the buyer chose not to smuggle them home and instead asked the shop to for delivery service.

When the delivery guy reached, he made a call…

“Boss I have reached you block, can you come down to collect your discs?”
“You have reached ah… Uh… I have to go down to collect ah?”
“Well, if you want I can also bring it up to you.”
“Huh? You come to my house? Uh… never mind la, you leave it downstairs”
“Ok what is your unit number? I put into your mailbox”
“My unit number is …”

- Long Pause -

“Never mind, you take them back. I don’t want already.”

And the buyer hangs up the phone as he was too afraid to accept the order for fear the police is just round the corner waiting for him. I’m not trying to advocate piracy, but that was overly uptight on the buyer’s part. Haha!

I tend to believe people are more cautious about not breaking the law in real life. However, the same person will let his guard down on the Internet. I would like to urge you to excercise the same caution online, especially since Singapore does not have the best privacy laws. You can be traced. Think twice before posting questionable materials online. Don’t take unnecessary risks please.

“Singaporeans forget piracy online is illegal…” için 9 Yorum

thank you for the reminder to us, many times we forget that whatever we do could be illegal and when we get caught its over.

  4. Jack Chen says:

This reminds me of some US people discussing video piracy on their blog some years back. Basically, it is piracy. Through unlawful means, you get material which should have costs you a lot more.

When you get caught, you ‘walk the plank’ like pirates of old or get to hang from the ship’s mast.

Nice post man. Support Original then won’t have all this problem already :)

  6. Francis says:

    Why piracy is abundant

Because of greed from the software providers, they price it high and that leads to piracy. It is a chicken and egg problem.

With a population of 5 billion people on earth, if you sell your software for $10 and everybody buys it, it is 50 billion income. But if you price it at $1000, most people cannot afford it and it becomes useless, because nobody is skill at that software, it becomes a barrier to entry.

CEOs and CFOs of Software companies, never ever thought of this point. The more they protect, the more they lose. Companies would never want to use illegal software. Because of legal implications. But for individuals – getting a new software to play means gaining knowledge – on that software and it becomes a selling point later for the Software provider, it is like a free walking salesman.

It is totaly greed that all these software companies that doing all these things. And it is just greed for a short term.
