Nintendo has just released the latest firmware, version 4.2. Unlike previous roll outs, this update has no performance improvement. It is designed with the single goal of locking users with hacked Wiis.
For users with native US Wii:
If your Wii is not hacked, just update via the Internet update, there is no harm.
If your Wii is hacked, use the 4.2 updater by Zector to update. You will need some knowledge of using Homebrew Channel or Loadmii to run the update. You will also need to have your Wii connected to the internet.
For users with Korean / Japanese converted to US Wii:
You know you have a Korean Wii if your Wii’s serial number starts with “LKM”
Do not update until further notice. You will brick your Wii. You know you bricked your Wii if you see “Error:003 Unauthorized device has been detected”. The only way to save it, is if you have bootmii installed in boot2 and a nand back up. Otherwise, your Wii is as useful as a brick now.
Some pictorial evidence:

There is no cure for now. Please let your friends with Wii know not to update their Wii to the latest version. We will update this post once we get more information.

To all owners who brick their wii using the official update from Nintendo,
the guys over at wiihacks.com has offer some solutions that might work though I think the success rate is very low. But if you brick your wii by following some online guide, there is hope for you as you might still have some ios that can be used to unbrick it. Goto wiihacks.com or GBATemp.net and search for possible solutions.

To those who have error 003 and can’t unbrick your set, fear not as you can still play cd games but you just can’t access the menu.. for more details, email me wiihelps@gmail.com
@Qisahn: wiihelps is somehow able to unbrick these Wiis using a modchip called drivekey along with a GameCube controller. Can you please look into that option and offer it to us at a reasonable price instead of the ridiculous $100 that wiihelps is charging.
Thank You
you feel that it is ridiculous then you can don’t choose not to buy it at all.. You can google and see how much the modchip actually costs, instead of ranting over here
Na just trolling.
